Snazz London x Depaul UK

By Jesse - 16 April 2019

This Good Friday, I’m launching a special event with SnazzBacks and Overlock Arts to raise funds for Depaul UK. We’re bringing together some big names from the world of music and fashion for a unique night out that we hope will make a real difference.

The event will take place monthly, and launches at Overlock Arts in Dalston, London on Friday 19th April 2019 (6pm-11pm). We want to provide a platform for creatives, rising fashion brands and start-ups to showcase their products and guests will also enjoy appearances from rising stars such as Eyez, Manga, Miki Rose, Dubzy and Rinse FM DJ-duo Sicaria Sound.

I chose Depaul UK to benefit from the event, because youth homelessness is a cause close to my heart. When I was younger, my family moved around a lot and eventually things became so tough for my family that I was left homeless for several periods in my late teens and early 20s.

I’ve lived with nearly all of my closest friends at some point or another and, though I appreciate their support, I hated it so much and never felt comfortable occupying someone else’s space.

In particular, I lived on one friend’s bedroom floor for a whole year. When I couldn’t stay at a friend’s, I stayed on the street or random apartment-block corridors.

At the time, I didn’t know that charities like Depaul existed. I didn’t know there were organisations out there like Depaul UK, which works to prevent homelessness and supports young people by providing emergency accommodation and long term accommodation.

I was lucky to put my experience of homelessness behind me, but I know that if I’d had the support offered by charities like Depaul UK, my situation would have improved more quickly.

Today I am a recording artist, event organiser and GQ-credited fashion designer. What’s even more important to me is that I’m a homeowner, and I’m lucky enough to have been able to give my mum a home to live in too.

My experience of homelessness has shaped me, but I wouldn’t wish it on anyone else. That’s why the mission of Depaul UK and the work that they do means so much to me. When I decided to create an event based around the passions of the SnazzBacks team, I decided to give back to a charity that means a lot to us too.

Snazz London events aim to support the charity to increase the number of young people it can support, in a creative, cool, and positive setting. If you’d like to attend, you can purchase tickets here!
