Introduction

Depaul UK offers homeless and disadvantaged people the opportunity to fulfill their potential and move towards an independent and positive future.  Depaul UK manages a range of accommodation for homeless young people in the UK and Ireland, as well as providing resettlement, pre-employment training and other support services for homeless and socially disadvantaged young people.

Project description

Mentoring is a service within Depaul which supports young people to become more independent, to learn skills that they will use when move on from our services. For example this could be cooking or budgeting skills.  The young people using the mentoring service will already have goals they would like to work on, these goals will all be productive for independence such as getting out into the community and building social networks.  The mentor will meet with their mentee once a week for up to three hours at a time and complete an activity.  The volunteer mentors will always be supported by the volunteer mentor co-ordinator.

Aim of the volunteer role

To provide mentoring support to people from a variety of backgrounds who are making the transition to independence.  To deliver fun and engaging mentoring sessions to Depaul clients. The focus will be based on health & wellbeing, skills development, creativity and community involvement.

Activities
  • To meet with your mentee for up to three hours a week and complete fun but productive sessions with them working on their already identified goals.
  • To be a listening ear for the mentee
  • To contact your mentee weekly to arrange sessions
  • To contact the Volunteer and Mentor Co-ordinator after the sessions by either text message, email or phone call.  This is logging the sessions and keeping a record of time and activity spent with the mentee.
  • To email the expense record to the Volunteer and Mentor Co-ordinator to claim back expenses
  • To attend one support session every eight weeks with the Volunteer and Mentor Co-ordinator
  • To attend volunteer forums which take place once every three months, volunteer forums are a great way to get together and discuss our experiences.  We often have guest speakers from other organisations.
Necessary skills, attitudes and knowledge

Volunteers should have an understanding of the issues faced by disadvantaged young people such as homelessness.  The ability to work in a non-judgemental manner is also essential. Good communication, listening and IT skills are important to this role.

Support and supervision

As a volunteer you will be line managed by the Volunteer and Mentor Co-ordinator Cherelle Farrell.  Cherelle will be providing constant support and guidance throughout your volunteering to ensure that the experience is enjoyable for you as well as for your mentee.

Induction and training

Volunteer Induction training and mentor training must be completed before volunteering can begin. This is to ensure you have a good understanding of your role and feel confident in your volunteering. The Volunteer Induction training is a full day course welcoming you to Depaul and exploring policies and procedures as well as Safety Framework. Mentor training is a half day course covering all of the practicalities for your volunteering role. Volunteers providing an ongoing commitment will have access to Depaul UK training courses if appropriate.

Commitment

A commitment of 3 hours a week is desirable, there will also be some evening and weekend events.  You can choose to volunteer week days, evenings and Saturdays.

If you are unable to offer this much time, but are still interested, please do contact us and we can try to come to an agreement. We are flexible and appreciate that people’s circumstances do change and that it may prove impossible to adhere to this. If you have not been active in your volunteering for 3 months we will contact you and if you have not been active for 6 months your volunteering role will naturally be ended.  You would then re-apply for any volunteering at Depaul again going through the full volunteer recruitment process.

You can provide a package of basic toiletries to a young person fleeing domestic abuse during lockdown.
You can provide a young homeless person with a safe bed for the night, a friendly, listening ear, a healthy meal and toiletries.
You could provide a tablet so a young person can stay connected during lockdown, enabling them to apply for jobs or bid for long-term housing.
