Depaul UK awarded £225,000

January 29th, 2016

A new emergency accommodation service for young people is set to open in Sheffield – thanks to a £200,000 award from players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Depaul UK – which operates Nightstop programmes across the UK and supports more than 3,500 young people every year – announced the news after the award was presented at the charity Lottery’s Annual Gala in Edinburgh.

And the homelessness charity will receive an additional £25,000 – from players of People’s Postcode Lottery – to help its services across the UK.

As a result of the £200,000 award, young people in Sheffield who are in danger of sleeping in an unsafe place will be able to access a bed, a shower and an evening meal in the home of community volunteer hosts and their families.

Nightstop Sheffield will provide flexible emergency accommodation until a more permanent solution to their homelessness is found.

Depaul UK Chief Executive Martin Houghton-Brown said: “Many thanks to the kind players of People’s Postcode Lottery for supporting young people facing homelessness in Sheffield and across the UK.

“Because of your great generosity, no young person in the city this year should have to sleep in an unsafe place with nowhere else to go. With this fantastic support, Depaul UK will work with the community to ensure postcodes across Sheffield will shine as a beacon, lighting up the lives of young people in their hour of need.

“The city’s Nightstop hosts will be able to open their doors to those most at risk, providing a warm welcome and a safe haven for the night. For these young people, there’s now light where once there was darkness.”

More than £5.1million was awarded  to good causes during People’s Postcode Lottery’s annual Charity Gala event.

To date, players of the Edinburgh-based charity lottery have raised an incredible £99.6million for good causes across Great Britain and internationally.

The prestigious event was attended by Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, TV presenter Fiona Philips and Dame Ellen MacArthur.

Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery Clara Govier said: “Depaul UK is doing fantastic work around the country supporting young people who are at risk of homelessness.

“Players will be delighted to know that the award of £200,000 presented to Depaul UK at the People’s Postcode Lottery Charity Gala will be used to start this amazing new project in Sheffield.”

She added: “As People’s Postcode Lottery continues to grow the amount that our players award to good causes continues to increase. We are very proud our players can continue to support the development of fantastic causes.”
