Depaul UK resident Lisalouise Macgregor has been awarded a university scholarship – after her photography was displayed at a prestigious exhibition.

Lisalouise, 21, who currently lives in supported accommodation run by homelessness charity Depaul UK in Greenwich, south-east London, was over the moon when she learnt of her triumph at an exhibition of photographs by people affected by homelessness, at The Guardian’s headquarters, on Thursday, 17 May.

She will now achieve her dream of studying design and digital media at Ravensbourne, a specialist college for the creative industries, in north Greenwich, London.

Delighted Lisalouise said: “I’ve always wanted to do this. When I experienced the major part of my homelessness, I was applying for uni. So, this is meant to be! I didn’t go to uni because of homelessness and now it’s just come back around because of homelessness.

“Depaul has helped me a lot. They found the [photography] course for me. It wasn’t easy but he [her support worker] didn’t just give up. He actually found an activity that suited me. During the course he was always asking me for updates and wanted to know how it was going.

“I feel like I want to go to university tomorrow. Before, I’d be sitting there thinking, ‘I don’t have a house. I don’t have this. I don’t know what I’m going to do. I don’t have a job’. Now it’s OK.”

Lisalouise was awarded the scholarship at a private viewing of the “Displacement” photography exhibition, organised by Accumulate, a charity providing creative workshops to young people affected by homelessness.

The scholarship was funded by estate agency Brickworks London, the ethical estate agency.

Depaul UK CEO Mike Thiedke said: “We would like to congratulate Lisalouise on her amazing achievement. This is a life-changing opportunity which we’re sure she’s ready to grasp with both hands.

"At Depaul, we’re proud of the support we provided to help her find something that inspired her to achieve such great things.

“We’re also grateful to Accumulate who provide creative courses which can really inspire young people like Lisalouise. This is a great example of charities across the sector working together to give people the opportunities to shine and reach their potential.”
