Depaul UK Launches New Overseas Fundraising Challenge
Walk the Camino de Santiago for Charity in 2018!
Depaul UK is inviting supporters to join a sponsored walk of a lifetime along Spain’s famous Camino de Santiago.
This unique charity walk, will see a team of intrepid Depaul UK supporters trek the final 110 kilometres of the “Way of Saint James”, starting at Sarria and ending in Santiago, Spain.
The team will be walking to raise vital funds for young people affected by homelessness in the UK.
Trekking The Way of Saint James
The Camino de Santiago, or “The Way” as it is also widely known, is a network of ancient pilgrim trails which finish at the tomb of St James, in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, Spain.
Legend has it that centuries ago, Saint James's remains were carried by boat from Jerusalem to northern Spain, where he was buried. For hundreds of years, people have paid tribute to St. James by recreating his final journey, and walking The Way as a spiritual pilgrimage, a fitness challenge, or a personal journey of reflection.
Camino walkers often attach a shell to their bags to symbolise their pilgrimage and wish fellow walkers “Buen Camino”, a gesture of camaraderie and good luck for their journey.
Anna Couper, Depaul UK’s Community Fundraising Manager, said:
“This is the first year that supporters from Depaul UK will take part in this inspiring overseas challenge.
“Our charity walkers will take on challenging distances of around 20 kilometres a day, with the trek ending at the historic city of Santiago de Compostela. We hope the walk will raise more than £60,000 for the work of Depaul UK. If we could reach our target, the challenge will help to pay for 4,000 nights of accommodation for young people experiencing homelessness.
“If you’d like to do something different in 2018 and help young people in need, then we’d love to hear from you.”
This challenge is physically demanding. The team will take on varied terrain and walk around 20 kilometres every day. Participants will need great walking boots, good physical fitness, and the commitment to fundraise and become a key member of Depaul UK’sdedicated team of charity hikers.
Depaul UK will organise flights, accommodation (half-board basis), and will provide a qualified guide for the walking route. All participants will be asked to raise a minimum of £1,750, which will support Depaul UK’s vital work with young homeless people in the UK.
Participants all will be given fundraising and training advice to help them complete the challenge.
