Nightstop wins big from Big Lottery Fund

September 5th, 2018

Nightstop North East has been awarded almost a quarter of a million pounds from the Big Lottery Fund to provide support and emergency accommodation for those facing homelessness.

Thanks to an award of £240,000, the service will be able to continue helping those most vulnerable, and expand its services in the North East.

Nightstop North East is part of the national Nightstop UK network run by Depaul UK. Nightstop services around the UK offer young people and vulnerable adults a bed for the night in the homes of trained and vetted volunteer hosts.

By offering short-term accommodation, volunteers can give people experiencing homelessness the breathing space they need to get back on their feet. Staff at the service also help people find other useful services and permanent accommodation.

Prevention Services Deputy Manager Dimas Lopez said: “We’re very grateful to the Big Lottery Fund for this renewed funding, which will ensure we are able to continue providing a safe night’s sleep at a moment of crisis for vulnerable people in the North East. Moreover, we will also be able to branch out into new areas of work and expand the support we give people in crisis.

“We are excited to develop the work we do with destitute migrants who are at risk of sleeping rough, and are striving to involve the people we work with even more in our decision making processes. This money will ensure that our volunteers and clients will have even more say in how we prevent and respond to homelessness in the North East.”
