Depaul makes Universal Credit Submission

June 19th, 2017

Depaul UK has made a submission to the Work and Pensions Select Committee Inquiry into Universal Credit.

The submission is based on evidence from Depaul UK’s staff and includes case studies showing the effects that Universal Credit has had on the young people with whom the organisation works.

While Universal Credit has the potential to help some young people looking for work or in low paying jobs, this submission shows there are major problems with the benefit.

Young people are having to rely on food banks and are getting into debt while they wait for their first payment.

Depaul UK calls on the Government to reduce the amount of time it takes for a first Universal Credit payment to be made, and ensure that budgeting support and alternative payment arrangements are provided as they should be.
